Introduction

Shree Moreshwar Temple, located in Morgaon village of Pune district, Maharashtra, is one of the most revered and ancient temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It holds exceptional religious importance as the first and foremost temple of the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage, a sacred circuit of eight Ganesha temples spread across Maharashtra. According to tradition, no Ashtavinayak yatra is considered complete without beginning and concluding it at Morgaon.

The temple is situated on the banks of the Karha River, surrounded by a peaceful rural landscape that enhances its spiritual atmosphere. The presiding deity, Lord Ganesha, is worshipped here in the form of Mayureshwar or Moreshwar, with the name derived from the peacock (Mayur), which is believed to be his vahana. The idol is unique, facing east, with a serpent adorning its head and trunk turned to the left, symbolizing wisdom and prosperity.

Historically, the temple is believed to have been originally built during ancient times and later renovated by Madhavrao Peshwa in the 18th century. The temple architecture reflects a blend of simplicity and strength, with a fortified stone wall and four minarets, giving it the appearance of a mosque from a distance—an intentional design to protect it during periods of invasion.

Religious legends state that Lord Ganesha defeated the demon Sindhu at this very place, establishing his supremacy and earning the title of Mayureshwar. Devotees from across India visit the temple, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi, Maghi Ganesh Jayanti, and other auspicious occasions.
